National home education guidance
Revised statutory guidance on the circumstances in which parents can choose home education was issued by the Scottish Government in January 2008 and sets out the respective roles and responsibilities of parents, children and education authorities. You can download the guidance here.
Local authority home education policy
The statutory guidance requires councils to make information about home education available on their websites, and by other means on request, but this is often concealed or non-existent.
The Scottish Home Education Forum has published a major piece of research on home educators’ experiences of local authorities’ policies entitled Home Truths. You can read a summary or the full report here.
